Abstract:Quarrying is a major economic activity in Kenya that supports local construction industry, creates employment opportunities and is a major contributor to the national economy. The use of large earth-moving vehicles and machines, the handling of explosives and heavy loads, ever-present airborne dust, and simply working on dangerous sites are all aspects of quarrying that increase the risk of both accidents and occupational diseases. This study aimed at assessing occupational hazard awareness and safety measures among quarry workers in Bomet County, Kenya. The study employed a descriptive cross sectional research design which used proportionate sampling methods to select 230 participants. Structured, interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data was analyzed using statistic package for social sciences version 21. All the questionnaires were filled and returned giving a response rate of 100%. The results showed that majority of the respondents (82.2%), were aware of occupational hazards in the quarry while the main source of information about hazards was from friends and colleques. The most known hazard among respondent was manual handling of heavy loads while the effect of hazard encountered by majority of respondents was back/shoulder/waist/arm pain. It also showed that majority of the respondents (81.7%) were not aware of safety measures in the quarry. The use of personal protective equipment as a way of preventing hazards was poor as only few of the workers used these equipments all the time. There was no provision of first aid and emergency services in case of emergencies. The challenges faced by law enforcing officers includes; inadequate staff, inadequate resources, weak legal structures, slow judial system, high unemployment rate in Kenya, lack of OSH representatives in quarries, lack of management commitment, inadequate funding from the government, lack of adequate information on OSH laws, corruption and bribery, political influence, lack of job security, lack of safety culture and cost of compliance with osh laws. The study recommends the quarry owners and management to put place measures to raise awareness among the workers about OSH and its importance, provide appropriate protective devices to workers, and adhere to regulations on occupational safety and health which provides for the rights of every worker to fair labour practices, reasonable working conditions, and a clean and healthy environment. The study also recommends that periodic medical examination for the quarry workers should be implemented. In addition to health history and physical examination, specific laboratory tests should be carried out on workers at least every year, such as spirometry and chest radiography in quarry workers exposed to dust, fumes, and gas, audiometry in those exposed to noise, and cold test with measurement of finger systolic blood pressure in users of vibratory tools so as to identify potential health problem and the effectiveness of existing preventive strategies. The study also recommends the government and relevant enforcement bodies (NEMA and DOSHS) should impose higher restrictions and enforcement guidelines for establishing quarries with proper provision for OSH services before granting licenses to quarry owners/operators. Finally, the study recommends that the government in partnership with County governments, DOSHS, NEMA, trade unions and other relevant agencies need to organize periodic workshops and training programmes on occupational safety and health for quarry workers which cover proper education on workplace hazards, types and proper use of protective devices to safeguard their health.
