Abstract: Introduction: The widespread presence or prevalence of diabetes mellitus type 2 is increasing rapidly in the United Arab Emirates. An individual person with diabetes mellitus may get greater exposure for the complications in later life. It is known as the non-communicable modern epidemic which has become a global threat .The aim is to understand the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus type 2 and the effect of its risk factors among adults in the United Arab Emirates.

Research design and methodology: We searched four electronic databases such as Medline Complete, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and suggested literature from experts also assessed. The searching keywords are prevalence, epidemiology, diabetes mellitus type 2, risk factors, modifiable risk factors, non-modifiable risk factors, population at risk, UAE, United Arab Emirates. One hundred fifty six articles found after primary search and eight articles were selected for the final review.

Results: This research results revealed the prevalence varied in different parts of the UAE such as in the Northern Emirates (19.1%-25.1%), in Dubai (12.4%-14.7%) and (19.0%-19.3%) among adult residents and citizens, in Al Ain the (18.8%-40.7%) among residents. The factors such as aging >35 years among citizens and (41-60, 61 plus) among residents, obesity (BMI >30 for Arabs and Europeans and >27 for Asians), central obesity (>102 cm in men and >88 cm in women for Arabs and Europeans, > 90 cm in men and >80 cm in women for Asians), positive family history of diabetes mellitus type 2, ethnicity, suffering from dyslipidemia and hypertension, less physical activity, duration of staying in the UAE more than 10 years, unhealthy diet, being single (widow, separated, divorced) and stress were positively associated with high prevalence.

Conclusion: The results considered planning for early screening, intervention, health resources allocation to pursue specific approaches to reduce high prevalence.

Abstract: Introduction: Anaemia is a clinical condition characterized by a reduction in the normal values of haemoglobin concentration, circulating erythrocytes and other erythrocyte indices per unit of blood.

Aim: The present study evaluates the potential ameliorative effects of the hydromethanol extract of the leaves of Craterispermum schweinfurthi following phenyl hydrazine induced anemia in male wistar rats.

Methodology: A total of 40 male wistar rats weighing between 100-250 g were randomly divided into 8 groups of 5 rats each. Phenyl hydrazine was administered in 3 separate doses: 9am on day 0; 9am and 6pm on day 1 to all rat groups except groups 1 and 8. The rat groups were subsequently treated as follows: Group 1 (negative control) received extract vehicle only; Group 2 received 40 mg/kgbw of phenyl hydrazine only; Groups 3-5 received 250, 500 and 750 mg/kgbw respectively of hydromethanol leaves extract of Craterispermum schweinfurthi; Group 6 received 0.23ml/kgbw of Bioferon®; both Groups 7 and 8 received 2000mg/kgbw of phytosterol. The extract, Bioferon and phytosterol were administered once daily using oro-gastric cannula for 14 days. On day 15, the rats were placed under chloroform anaesthesia and blood samples collected by direct cardiac puncture into appropriate sample tubes for estimation of erythrocyte count, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, platelet count, total white blood cell count and differential counts using automated methods.

Results: Amongst Group 2 rats, values of erythrocyte, platelet and leucocyte indices were significantly reduced (p<0.05) following phenyl hydrazine administration compared to Group 1 rats. However, administration of the extract, significantly increased (p<0.05) these parameters in a dose dependent manner amongst Groups 3, 4 and 5 rats. A similar increase was observed amongst Groups 6 and 7 rats administered Bioferon® and phytosterol respectively: suggesting a potential ameliorative effects of the extract comparable to the effects of Bioferon®.

Conclusion: Apparently the hydromethanol leaf extract of Craterispermum schweinfurthi exhibits potential beneficial dose dependent effects on haematopoiesis in experimental animals. These validates the use of the leaves of the plant in our environment as a tonic. Our findings are preliminary requiring further investigations.

Abstract: Evaluation of wound healing activity of crude latex of Calotropis procera stem was investigated in this present study. Thirty (30) rats of both sexes were divided into six groups of five animals each, Group A (Control) was administered feeds and distilled water only; group B was treated with 0% Calotropis procera crude latex + 100% ointment ; group C was treated with 25% Calotropis procera crude latex + 75% ointment; group D was treated with 50% Calotropis  procera crude latex + 50% ointment; group E was treated with 75% Calotropis procera crude latex + 25% ointment and group F was treated with 100% Calotropis procera crude latex + 0% ointment. The results of histological examination showed that the wounds after 7 days treatment with crude latex of Calotropis procera stem exhibited marked dryness of wound edges with regeneration of healing tissue and the wound area was also considerably reduced. A near test of granulation tissue sections displayed faster tissue regeneration in the treated group compared to untreated group administered distilled water only. Also, there was marked infiltration of inflammatory cells, increased blood vessel formation and enhanced proliferation of fibroblasts in latex of Calotropis procera stem treated groups mostly group F which performed favourably and higher than the conventional ointment. The fresh crude latex of Calotropis procera stem showed practical wound healing activity which was attributed to its phytochemical constituents. The mechanism of action of wound healing property of latex of Calotropis procera and future research on internal wound healing like ulcer are recommended for further study.

Abstract: Kidney stones affect several biological processes, including urine volume, pH, calcium oxalate, and urates. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antiurolithiatic potential of Parkia biglobosa, Lannea humilis stem bark and KO-888 (Jigsimur). These plants were extracted with methanol using soxhlet extraction. The phytochemical screening was carried out using standard procedures. Renal calculi were induced using ethylene glycol in 55 rats and treated with the extracts and KO-888 for 14 days. The phytochemical contents showed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, hydrogen cyanides, glycosides, alkaloids, phenols, and terpenoids with copious concentrations of glycosides, alkaloids, and terpenoids in the plant extracts. While, steroids, hydrogen cyanides, alkaloids, and terpenoids were absent in K0-888 compared to the plant extracts. The MDA level decreased significantly (p<0.05) at all doses in the treatment groups. The SOD activity showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in Lannea humilis and KO-888 at all doses and low dose mixture of Lannea humilis and Parkia biglobosa (50:50). The CAT activity showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in all treated groups. While GPx activity showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in Lannea humilis at a low dose and Parkia biglobosa at a high dose. These antioxidant enzyme effects were less than the standard. The blood urea nitrogen showed a significant (p<0.05) reduction in all treatment groups and the creatinine level showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease in Lannea humilis and KO-888 at all doses, similar to the standard. Hence, they could be used for the protective management of kidney diseases.
