Abstract:This paper reviews the factors influencing patronage of traditional bone setters (TBS) by bone fracture patients, despite the services of modern orthopaedic surgeons (MOS) and well-equipped medical orthopaedic centers in Nigeria. Major causes of bone fractures in Nigeria include: road traffic accident, road side fall, workplace fall, fall at home, fall from heights, gun-short injury, assault, sports, etc.Categories of bone fractures include: closed fractures, open fractures, joint injuries, soft tissue injuries, bone infections, spine injuries, etc. Socio-cultural factors such as education, level of income, residence, exorbitant medical charges, pressure/advice from family and friends, fear of amputation, strikes in hospitals, delayed attention, lack of ambulance services and essential amenities in rural areas,  general attitude of medical health workers and cultural belief in supernatural causes of accidents, etc influence the patronage of traditional bone setters (TBS) in Nigeria. Appropriate government policies, regular training, education and sensitization of TBS, public enlightenment on benefits and complications associated with the practice, as well as accessible and affordable medical orthopaedic services are recommended to improve service delivery and reduce the complications in traditional bone setting in Nigeria.

Abstract:In the recent decades, there has been a concern on heavy metals in wastewater and high cost of conventional methods which used in their removal, for this reason search on adsorbents with biological origin, low cost and efficient is necessary.  In this work a composite of chitosan shrimp shells (CH) coalesced with activated carbon (AC) was prepared and used for  removal of Pb⁺²   from  simulated wastewater. The particles of the CH/AC composite were characterized by Surface area and particle size analyzer,pHpoint of zero charge (p analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). The effect of operational parameters including initial pH, contact time, composite dose, and initial metal ions concentration are explored   and optimized through completely mixed batch reactors. The results revealed that, the optimum condition for lead (II) removal by CH/AC composite were pH equal 5.0-5.5, and adsorbent dose equal to2.0-3.0 g/l. The composite has positive surface charge at optimum pH that means chemisorption is the dominant mechanism for lead (II) sorption by the composite. The equilibrium data for lead adsorption well fitted to Langmuir equation with maximum adsorption capacity (Q _max) of 41.15 mg/g.  The adsorption kinetics is best described with the pseudo-second-order model, with a correlation coefficient (R²) close to unity, which indicate that, the chemical sorption is the rate – limiting step.

Abstract:Natural medicine in form of Traditional Medicine (TM) or Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) have proved to be efficacious in treatment of various diseases for bodily, physical, mental, spiritual and general wellbeing. In Nigeria, natural medicine has been applied to treat sickle cell disease, cancer, musculoskeletal pain, asthma, malaria, typhoid fever, pile, fever, measles, diarrhea, cough, sexually transmitted diseases, stomach ulcers, pneumonia, diabetes, mental disorders, stroke et cetera. The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) is mandated to produce, develop, regulate and integrate natural medicines into the Nigerian healthcare delivery system. The applications of natural medicine (TM/CAM) in the Nigerian healthcare delivery system have been proven to be essential, beneficial, safe and affordable to rural and urban dwellers in Nigeria.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate physicochemical quality of industrially processed and fresh natural milk samples found in Arba Minch town, and to compare the nutritional and mineral contents of the processed and raw milks. Physicochemical properties like pH, viscosity, Ash, total solid, acidity and conductivity are examined the results were found to be 6.54±0.32 for Raw, 6.38±0.197 for Anchor and 6.48±0.33 in Harme brand, 1.38±0.14 in raw 1.86±0.22 in anchor and1.32±0.12 in Harme,1.8±0.032 in raw, 1.6±0.001 in anchor, 1.4±0.006 in Harme, 14±0.25 in raw, 9.6±0.183 in anchor and 14.76±0.093 in Harme, 0.81±0.005 in raw, in anchor, and 1.35±0.009 in Harme, 2.10±0.017 for raw, 4.38±0.155 for anchor, 1.72±0.038 for Harme of milk samples respectively. The nutritional values (protein, carbohydrate) of these milk samples were also determined to be 3.989±0.012 for raw, 5.181±0.018 for Anchor and 4.763±0.192 in Harme, 3.3±0.28in raw, 3.988±0.015 in Anchor and 4.83±0.14 in Harme respectively. Finally the micro and macro nutrients (Fe, Zn, Ca, Na and K) were analyzed using FAAS Table 4 and the values of all parameters were compared with the maximum limit of each parameter as cited by WHO (1986) guidelines to see the suitability of the milk for human body.

Abstract:Traditionally, fruit products have been regarded as microbiologically safer than other unprocessed foods. However, many outbreaks of human infections have been associated with the consumption of contaminated fruits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological safety and quality of fruits being served in various cities .The study was performed to evaluate locally prepared fruit juices such as Avocado, Mango and Banana fruits from some selected areas of shecha and sekela found in Arba Minch Town. Four sample for each Avocado, Mango and Banana of Total 12 fruit samples from secha and sekela were collected and their microbial load was analyzed in Microbiology laboratory on appropriate media by using four fold serial dilution techniques followed by spread plate techniques .The highest colony (over growth) were observed from Avocado fruit samples from Sekela and lowest colony (0 colony) were observed from mango fruit samples taken from Shecha site.
