Abstract:Postpartum period is a period after birth which is the most neglected aspect of maternal health, yet a time of high risk for maternal mortality. While many women access antenatal care, much fewer women globally have access to postnatal care. It is clearly evident that some women who test HIV negative in pregnancy end up testing HIV positive post delivery. Although most pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV negative, they remain at risk for HIV infection in the breastfeeding period. The purpose of this study was to describe the sociocultural risk factors associated with HIV seroconversion among breastfeeding women in a Rural county in Kenya. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at Homabay district hospital, in Homa Bay County in Kenya. The sample was 178 breastfeeding women who tested HIV negative at the last HIV test after delivery. The results revealed that violence of a partner to the women correlated with her positive HIV test (X2=128.112, df =3 p <0.0001). Refusal to use condom by the woman’s partner was as well associated with the mother’s positive HIV test (X2 =109.926, df = 3, p <0.001) and partner status in last HIV test (x2 =20.944, df=3, p <0.001). Lastly, being forced to have sex correlated with mothers postive HIV test (x2 =118.657, df=3, p <0.001). 2. Therefore, the study demonstrated that domestic violence is a major contributor to unprotected sex which therefore escalates the spread of HIV infection. Wife inheritance, as opposed to widow cleansing is still a major cultural practice in Luo culture which leads to spread of HIV infection.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of environmental degradation on socio-economic status of households in Keiyan Division. The study adopted survey design. A sample of 385 respondents was selected using stratified sampling techniques Primary data will be collected using a semi-structured questionnaire and interview schedule. The findings of the study revealed that cutting trees and other vegetation, improperly  disposed litter, soil erosion, garbage thrown in water, consumption of food and beverages while working, deficiencies in safety training and presence of smoke in the air and this has resulted in unpredictable weather, more debris at water points, reduced rainfall circulation, washing away of soil during rainy season, deforestation, some animals species moving to other places, and high temperatures during the night. The study recommended that the households should be encouraged to use organic pesticides and regular training of households on the best ways to alleviate environmental degradation.

Abstract:The study showed the level of awareness of the respondents to Anti-Violance Against Women and their Children Act of 2004 according to age, civil status, educational attainment and length of service. data presented a descriptive rating of “high” for age, civil status and length of service and “very high” according to educational attainment. Level of advocacy is said to “very high” among respondents who are young, single and with higher educational attainment. While those who are older, and with low educational attainment achieved a descriptive rating of “high”. Level of actualization of respondents has a descriptive rating of “high” regardless of their age, civil status, years in service and educational attainment. There is a significant difference between the level of awareness and the level of advocacy, between level of awareness and actualization and between level of advocacy and actualization. The researchers recommends the initiation, intensification of trainings and programs that would enrich the understanding of the public regarding the RA 9262 and human rights. That these policy should be included in learning institutions as initial step for the knowledge expansions on this issue especially of woman and parents; that there would be exhaustive info dissemination and monitoring on this policy implementation.

Abstract: Supply of agricultural produce is directly influenced by production and productivity. Therefore factors that affect agricultural production also affect supply. This study analyses the determinants of pineapple market supply in Bureti Sub County, Kericho County, Kenya. Multi stage sampling was used to select 133 farmers for the study using structured interview schedules. This was supplemented by secondary data collected using content analysis from different published and unpublished sources. Econometric analysis using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was used to analyse the collected data. Results of the findings revealed that area of land under pineapples and quantity of pineapple produced affected the quantities of pineapples supplied to the market significantly and positively at (p ˂ 0.01) by a factor of (r = 0.908) and (r = 0.667) respectively. The other factors that affected quantities supplied to the market positively at (p ˂ 0.05) were years in pineapple production (r = 0.296), education level (r = 0.204), total land holding (r = 0.284) and price at the nearest market(r = 0.305). Production seasonality and distance to the nearest market affected quantities supplied to the market at (p ˂ 0.1) by a factor of (r = - 0.371) and (r = 0.448) respectively.   Based on the findings the study concludes that factors that affect market supply can either be positive or negative thus results into an increase or a reduction in the quantities supplied to the market. The study therefore recommends training of farmers on modern production techniques, input usage and marketing.  It further recommends introduction of new high yielding pineapple varieties like MD2 and improvement of rural roads.
