Abstract: Absence of national grid to supply coastal regions necessitates provision of rural electrification. Electrical distribution network become the best option. Experience has shown that most of the projects executed within the region do not last due to numerous challenges such as workforce not familiar with environment, community relation issues, security, transportation, seasonal and tidal variations, no access roads, river-crossing, swampy soil, sand filling, high cost of operating and maintaining generating plants amongst others. All these invariably lead to either producing substandard projects or outright abandonment. Practical approach was adopted in the study. Sustainable development in rural communities can only be achieved when the suggested solutions in this study is properly applied to ensure an improved social, commercial and industrial life for rural dwellers.

Abstract: Power system harmonics are a threat to electric power systems with disastrous results। Line current harmonics also increase loss, instability, and voltage distortion। With the proliferation of power electronics converters and the increasing use of magnetic, power lines have become highly polluted। Both passive and active filters have been used near the harmonic production load or at the point of normal coupling to block current harmonics। Shunt filters still dominate harmonic compensation at medium and high voltage levels, while active filters have been declared for low / medium voltage ratings। With diverse applications associated with reactive power with harmonic compensation, passive filters are found to be suitable। Passive filtering has been preferred for harmonic compensation in distribution systems due to low cost simplicity, reliability, and controllers operation। Uncontrolled AC-DC converter poor power factor, injection of harmonics into AC mains, change in DC link voltage of input AC supply, overheating due to harmonic current absorption, Voltage drop suffers from operational problems caused by voltage distortion। Harmonic currents flowing through interference on system impedance, telephone and communication lines। Passive filters have traditionally been used to reduce distortion caused by harmonic current in industrial power systems But they have many drawbacks.

Abstract: Power Swing which is basically caused by the large disturbances in the power system which if not blocked could cause wrong operation of the distance relay and can generates wrong or undesired tripping of the transmission line circuit breaker. And if not prevented from the generator could cause severe damage to the machine. To prevent unwanted distance or other relay operation during a Power Swing, we did fundamental studies of traditional and advanced detection and stoppage methods. Further, we did research on setting of Power Swing Blocking (PSB) scheme to realize real applications.

Nowadays, due to the entry of wind power plants into the power systems, which causes changes in the network parameters, power swing detection has become more important. Changes in the wind speed and noncontinuity of the wind power plants lead to changes in the power swing characteristic. Therefore, the impedance seen by the distance relay is changed, and so the maloperation of the relay during the stable power swing may occur. is paper proposes a new method to detect power fluctuations based on the synchronous generator speed while it is independent of the network parameters.

Abstract: In this paper, a new passive method is proposed to detect islanding of distributed generation using the instantaneous energy that is calculated at the target distributed generation DG or PCC. The instantaneous energy feature can be used to detect islanding status. Instantaneous active energy during Event (IAEDE) and instantaneous reactive energy during event (IREDE) computed from the integration of the Instantaneous active power during the event (IAPDE) and the integration of the instantaneous reactive power during the event (IRPDE). The rate of change of angle (ψ) between them calculated for islanding detection (ROCOψ). The proposed technique has detected the islanding in a rather short time after islanding occurrence. The simulation results showed that the proposed technique could distinguish islanding from other similar events such as load switching at PCC and fault at PCC. This technique can detect islanding efficiently even with zero power mismatches between loads and DGs and hence, reduces the non-detection zone and does not mal operate during similar events. It is more reliable and dependable and the detection time is less than 0.5 sec.
